AltTab vs TypeJump: previews are good — direct jumps are better (2026)

AltTab is a beloved free and open-source utility with a crisp mission: bring Windows' alt-tab experience to macOS. Hold ⌥Tab and every open window appears as a thumbnail — including minimized and hidden ones, which macOS's native ⌘Tab notoriously mishandles. For switchers from Windows it restores a reflex macOS never satisfied.

But AltTab inherits cycling's ceiling: with fifteen windows open you still scan fifteen thumbnails, every time, and the one you want moves around as the ordering changes. It cannot launch anything, cannot open files or folders, and has no concept of what matters most in a browser-centric day: the tabs inside the windows.

TypeJump is a keyboard- and voice-driven launcher for macOS, built by Primazing Ideas GmbH in Berlin. Cycling is linear search performed by your eyes: fifteen windows means up to fifteen thumbnails scanned, and the scan repeats on every switch because the order keeps changing. A dedicated key is constant-time: ⌃S is Slack whether three windows are open or thirty, at 9 am or 6 pm. When an app has several windows, TypeJump shows AltTab-style live previews too — but as a stable grid you click or arrow through once, not a carousel you ride.

The computer-science way to say it: a search-based flow is O(n) — the time it takes grows with how much you have open and how well you type. A dedicated key is O(1): constant time, every time. Fifty switches a day at roughly five saved seconds each is more than two hours returned to you every month — TypeJump counts your personal number in Settings, on your Mac only.

AltTab is a keyboard reflex and nothing more. TypeJump adds the input cycling can never offer:

Voice is where the comparison simply ends: TypeJump is, as of 2026, the only macOS launcher with built-in voice jumping. The recognizer runs two engines at once — your Mac's language and English — and keeps whichever understood you better, so bilingual users never switch modes.
